and the number of each, I attach copies of the Armusl Report for the past three years which has this information in,

convenient tabular form.

Taking the principal items, the examination

usually required is:-

Metals:- Tin. Usually %Sn. Occasionally complete analysia

Other ores:- Usually for principal constituent

occasionally complete analysis.

Metals and ores average something over two

estimations apiece on the total number examined.

7. The examinations made under the heading "Tanks

of ships" are tests made on board tank steamers of the air

in the empty oil tanks to ascertain whether or not such air contains inflammable vapour. The tests are made with the Clowes-Redwood apparatus which is taken on board for the purpose. The number of tanks on each steamer varies but everages about twenty. The heading Petroleum oil and Fuel oil in the Annual Reports refers to Kerosene and fuel oil tested in most cases for Flash point only. There are about 6 samples of fuel oil per annum tested for the Navy for Viscosity at three temps, Sp.Gr. Flash point, sulphur, acidity, setting point, Water and Residue.

Only such tests are carried out on alcoholic beverages as are sufficient to enable a certificate to be issued under the Food and Drugs Ordinance.
